Madison residents have an additional reason to show gratitude to the late John and Gerry Maloney due to an additional $197,000 gift that arrived this month from the John W. Maloney Trust.
The money came from a Wells Fargo brokerage account and a partial distribution of the trust. City officials received the money on July 1, according to Mayor Gene Hexom.
Hexom said during the Monday commission meeting that the latest gift made to the city was in addition to the original $140,000 that John Maloney gave to Madison for the creation of the Gerry Maloney Nature Area.
John Maloney gave the money and land to the city for the nature area in memory of his wife, who had a deep interest in nature and South Dakota wildlife.
The city can only spend the proceeds for improvements and maintenance to the nature area, according to the provisions of the John W. Maloney Trust.
City officials were also directed to advise the co-trustees, Vincent J. Protsch and Lorraine Olson, as to the spending of the money and the nature of any improvements.
