Scholl seeks extension to complete shelterbelt fence

By ELISA SAND, Staff Reporter

Charlie Scholl came before Lake County Commissioners on Tuesday with a request to extend deadlines established on his conditional use permit for a salvage yard operation north of Junius.

The permit, which was approved by commissioners in February, has yet to be signed by Scholl. The permit outlined deadlines for construction of a gate, establishment of a sign and a surety bond, as well as construction of fencing along gaps in the existing shelterbelt.

According to the permit, the first established deadline is Aug. 15, which is when the gate and sign are to be completed and the surety bond is to be in place.

According to a letter commissioners, Scholl said that he intends to meet that deadline.

On Tuesday, however, Scholl indicated that the wet weather has made it difficult to make progress on fencing within the shelterbelt. He recently drilled holes for 10 trees in the shelterbelt, he said, and 8 of the 10 holes had standing water inside. According to Scholl's permit, fencing within the shelterbelt is to be completed by Dec. 31.

Scholl was also asked to put additional fencing or trees on the east side of the property where the shelterbelt isn't as thick. That is to be completed by Feb. 1, 2012.

Scholl asked Tuesday if commissioners would consider extending the deadline for the fencing to take into account the weather.

Commissioners first asked why Scholl hadn't approved the permit. Commissioner Chris Giles said that if Scholl signed the permit agreeing to meet the conditions set by the board, they would be more inclined to entertain a request for an extension.

Scholl said that he didn't want to sign the permit unless he knew he'd be able to meet the deadlines.

Commissioners agreed to put Scholl's request on their Aug. 3 agenda.
